
I read with interest a full page story about the Singapore Research Laboratory.
They are investing about RM600 million per year to do research for SAF, the Singapore Arm Forces. Being a Malaysian, I am always wondering when my country will start this sort of useful research. I had read Malaysian had been throwing billion of dollars in the lost investment in the banking sector in Hong Kong, but no report on investments in strategic research.
With investments of S$250mil per year, DSO is the largest R&D firm in Singapore employing more than 1000 scientist and engineers. It plays the leading role in developing defense technology, both locally as well as in collaboration with 7 leading countries.
One of the focused research is in the UAV, the unmanned aerial vehicles. This is one of the hot technology and tested by the US on the Talibans and the Pakistanis. The researchers found the work very challenging as they have to find new way of doing thing which are beyond what can be found in the textbook.
