Millionaire Politician Son of Sarawak CM

In Malaysia, one of the easiest way to become a millionaire is to be a politician. The wealth will be distributed to the family, the son of former PM is among the richest in Malaysia.

I can help to notice the news in thestar on 25 Dec 2012 Page 26, Nation, quoting that Mahmud, the son of Sarawak Chief Minister had millions in cash. The revelation was made at the Syariah Court in the trial of the CM and his former's wife.
It was mentioned in the court that Datuk Seri Mahmud had...
- more than 300,000 units in trust funds.
- Mahmud had withdrawn RM158,112 fron EPF in 1998 ans about RM1.5million in 2011.
- His EPF balance was around rm1.36mil

The wife had made claim against 50% of the asset owned by Mahmud, including several lixury cars, houses and lands in Sarawak.

A few witnesses were called to confirm that Mahmud do has a large fortune thus making the claim by the former wife justifiable. The fortune include the deposits in ASN accounts, CIMB and EPF.

Bribery Becomes a Way of Life

The situation is critical, however most people either they do not see it or don't bother about it. It is a small percentage that support it, not so such in their words but more in the action. But the effect is very obvious, example...
1. The right person or group will be deprived of the works or contract. That mean the 'less capable' will get it, and the results can be mammoth...abundant projects, project not completed on time, high cost and operational problem.
We actually do not know, but we can review and check if we has cases such as airport shutdown, roof collapse or school lab collapse, not all are caused by graft, but it is worth checking.

2. Additional Cost incurred - for example if a building supposed to cost RM100mil, it may be awarded at RM200mil or a simple songkok may cost rm50, may be purchased at RM200 each. Someone has to sponsor the bribe, and the unfortunate person is the taxpayers.
So it worth checking, if we buy s ship, a boat, submarine or helicopter, come with other. It may be accurate comparison as many of the equipment are buyer furnished, but the avionics and equipment are normally less than 50% of the total cost.

Political Interference Said Musa

The previous Malaysian Police IGP broke the tradition and when said that as the top police, he had to deal with the meddling of politician in his job of investigation. The receive call from home minister and even from other minister.
The home minister refused to comment and gave a odd excuse.

Come to think of this, the people still remember that the previous DPM was imprisoned due the case of political interference. It does seem odd, a similar situation can attract different dealings. If this is to happen in a developed nation like Japan, likely, the minister involved will not be able to avoid the feeling of shame and probably will resign.

Agriculture Project ninth Malaysian Plan

I was glancing at the PM speech for Malaysian Project  for NINTH MALAYSIA PLAN
2006-2010. It include some agricultural objectives  involving the production of food. I quote a few objectives and we can review whether we had achieved those objectives...

1. Malaysia aims to become a net exporter of food by  2010.

2. To realise these objectives, RM 11.4 billion has been  allocated for this sector; a 70 percent increase compared with the allocation in the Eighth Malaysia Plan. A large portion of the allocation will be for the development of infrastructure for irrigation and drainage, R&D, enhancing credit facilities and implementation of entrepreneur development programmes. Programmes to integrate and rationalise more than 100,000
hectares of land will be implemented, whereas more than 380,000 hectares of land will be replanted with rubber and oil palm. Other main projects include the creation of 28 Permanent Food Production Parks comprising a land area of almost 2,400 hectares,

a.  an Agropolis at Serdang and National  Food Terminals (TEMAN) at Ipoh and Kota Bharu.

b. We will also increase the development areas of oil palm clusters, livestock valleys, fruit valleys, quaculture parks and halal food parks.

Spurred from the Ninth Malaysia Plan, the National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp) was created to be the  centre of production for beef and beef products in Malaysia. This High Impact Project under Ninth Malaysia Plan,National Feedlot Centre project will be instrumental in attaining the 40% self sufficiency for beef production by 2015.

Have We Fulfill The Promise

When I went back for hari raya last weeks, my family was having a heated arguments about Malaysia progress record. Have we on track? or the politician are prompt to quote "we have meet our promise".

I noted the the arguments were characterized by emotion and Not Factual.
Non of Us had a clue about the DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVE and the MEASURES.

Let put it to test...
AA: Let us review the New Economic Policy.. program launched by the Malaysian government in 1971 under the then Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak. The NEP ended in 1990,
The GOALS..The Reid Commission stated that the intent of Article 153 was to address economic inequality among ethnic Chinese and Malays. In the period following Malaysian independence, however, the Bumiputra share of the economy did not substantially increase; as late as 1970, it was estimated that Bumiputras held only 2.4% of the economy, with the rest in Chinese and foreign hands

THE TARGET .. to achieve the 30% Bumiputra equity target set by the NEP. Amongst these was a requirement that all initial public offerings (IPOs) set aside a 30% share for Bumiputra investors. These investors could be selected by the company being listed on the stock exchange, or the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, which would normally recommend such state-owned trust agencies as Permodalan Nasional or the Armed Forces pension fund.

THE 9 MALAYSIAN PLAN.
The ECER was launched by Malaysia's Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in Kuala Terengganu and Kota Bahru on October 30, 2007 and in Kuantan the next day. During the launch of the project, the Prime Minister announced a RM 6 billion allocation for the opening phase of the project, strengthening the Malaysian government's commitment to the project

ETP
The Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) is a comprehensive effort that will transform Malaysia into a high-income nation by 2020.
It will lift Malaysia's gross national income (GNI) per capita from USD6,700 or RM23,700 in 2009 to more than USD15,000 or RM48,000 in 2020, propelling the nation to the level of other high income nations. This GNI growth of six per cent per annum will allow us to achieve the targets set under Vision 2020.

NKEA : National Key Economic Area

NKEAs: The Engines of Economic Growth

There are 12 National Key Economic Areas that were jointly identified by the private and public sectors to kickstart the Economic Transformation Programme. These NKEAs represent economic sectors that will drive the highest possible income over the next ten years.

Focus on these NKEAs will ensure that high impact projects, together with policy support and incentives from the government, will collectively contribute towards Malaysia achieving its goal of becoming developed nation by 2020.

The 12 NKEAs cover eleven industries and one geographical territory: Oil, Gas and Energy; Palm Oil; Financial Services; Tourism; Business Services; Electronics and Electrical; Wholesale and Retail; Education; Healthcare; Communications Content and Infrastructure; Agriculture; and the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley.

The economic growth of these NKEAs through the effective implementation of 131 Entry Point Projects and 60 Business Opportunities will result in the Malaysian economy undergoing significant changes to resemble the economies of other developed nations.

These are the initiatives to achieve the targets.. taken from ETP  http://etp.pemandu.gov.my/default.aspx

The newspaper on 1 Aug 2012 published the unexpected news, from my memory, this is the first time a minister under the ruling party, Barisan National, had joint the opposition party. Off course the most of the national paper had reported it differently. On headline was... The minister was sacked..

The deputy minister, Lajim, had made the announcement that he had resigned from the UMNO supreme council and Beaufort UMNO division.     Dato Lajim, 57, was elected as an MP in the General Election in 2008, when he defeated the opposition by 10,000 votes.

Half Month Bonus For Civil Servants

The year 2012 sees Malaysian are getting ready for another general election. RM billions are being given as gifts, bonus of payment by the government to attract support. The latest was the half month bonus to be paid on Aug 9,  just rightly timed for the annual Muslims celebration of Eid or known in Malaysia as Raya Puasa.

The half month bonus means that the staff will get half of their pay or rm500, whichever is the higher. A special gift is also given to pensioners amounting to rm500 each. The bonus is expected to cost the government an extra expenses of RM2.2 billion, adding the extra to our already heavy debts.

The payments will be made to about 1.27mil civil servants and 657,000 pensioners.

Malaysian Voters

The debate on the Bersih

In the open debate with the UMNO Youth, KJ, Ambiga words were...

1. Neither Najib or Malaysian will get a fair election. That remind me of the video on Najib with the voters for the Sibu election when they were haggling about money from government.

2. Electrol role - A group of person were involved in a three month research part of the Merak Project. Their findings were staggering...

  - 19 voters were born before 1900
  - 1500 voters with ic 7x - meaning that they were born overseas.
  - 3.5 million show different voting constituency compared to that of the IC. This was informed to JPN and SPR in 2002 and nothing was done.
 - There are 65,00 foreigners.

3. Postal Voters.
a. In Sibu, SPR received 39 additional voting slip compared to the issue.
b. In you tube ex -soldiers are telling of their task to cast 1000 votes.
c. Lembah Pantai - the postal voters increase from 159 to 2139.
d. more than 100,000 overseas voters cannot vote. These people are well informed compared to the traditional villagers.

Lynas Rare Earth Plants

Malaysia has given the green light for the Lynas. The parliamentary select committed had elaborated and satisfied that there is no danger to operate the plants. The radiation level experienced by the workers would be well below the maximum permitted by international standard.

BUT please wait......

The paper on friday 29 jun 2012 said that Lynas has 10 months to submit the disposal plan. Not only that... two more conditions not fullfilled yet...

1. The control of the release of dust to the environment.
2. How to immobilize the disposed radiactive residue.

DO YOU MEAN THAT WE ALLOW LYNAS TO START AND NOT KNOWING HOW TO THE WASTE WILL BE MANAGED?. THE WASTE IS THE ISSUE, LIKE THE CASE OF BUKIT MERAH.

Police Car in Workshops

As report in thestar on 17 May 2012, about 100 police cars are lying the workshop in Malacca. It came as a surprise as the government was in the mode of given cash in millions to people.

FAKE IDs In SABAH

The issue of "Fake" identification cards had been a long outstanding issue in Sabah and it is gaining entrance to West Malaysia. Books had been written on it and accused it to be the reason for Barisan wins in Sabah.

With the modern equipments, it is hard to believe that nothing can be done about it. The number of new voters jumps beyond statistical reality in some areas. People will certainly ask, if the IDs are fake, it will be known on the registration for voters. We can easily compare with the data base, unless, the "FAKE" is intended.

A special Task force was set up 10 years ago to probe into the problem. More than 300 people were screened. Only now the task force come to realize that problem is serious. What is interesting, thy can get the IDs for as low as rm80/ as reported in the start on 15 may 2012 page N25.

shafie denied paying an actress

The star front page on 24 April 2012 carried a shocking news about a minister, Datuk Shafie Apdal, The Rural and Regional Development Minister. A man was hired to be a driver for a local starlet with the intent to keep a close tab of her movement. It was claimed that the minister was paying her a large amount of money for the relationship. It did no elaborate the activities involved in the relationships ans what the payment was made for,

The working relationship between the hired driver in the starlet turned sour and the driver was accused of taking some of the money for himself. To clear his name, the driver made a police report. The driver claimed that the minister met the starlet on weekly basis and paid through the driver between rm100,000 and rm200,000 to be banked. In Oct 2011,she received rm58,000, Rm112,000 in No and RM330,000 in Dec and RM510,000 in Jan 2012.

That was a lot of money. He admitted to receive RM25,693 for her sport car.

As expected the Minister denied it. I think, if the government want to clear his name, it is too easy,As the payment was made by cheque, the data is available at the bank.If they want to avoid it, they will say...' please prove what you accuse". If payment were made prove it, and it is difficult as banks data is secret.

Plight of the Trainee Doctors

I was reading with anger the news about the death a trainee doctors, presumably under the houseman ship. Lee 29 years was found dead in a restroom in Kajang hospital with used syringe likely to drug used to fight fatigue.

I was naive when I imagined that the doctors working "on call" were like an airline pilots staying at home on standby. When my daughter was doing her houseman, only then I realized that how cruel the system was. On call was to mean to continue working for the second shift. She was doing the morning shift, 7 am to 7 pm, then she was on call , that mean she continued to work 7pm to 7 am the next day. On the next day, she will continue her normal shift. She she working her 36 hr shift.

I thought that it is crazy. You may have thought that the bosses of the hospitals are able to think logically. How could you expect the doctors to discharge her duties when he/she is too tired.

It was reported that Lee was working for his 5 consecutive days. As expected, the hospital tried to deny the report. We hope no cover up and no redo and modification of the records and rosters just to save someone's head.

Nazifuddin Option in Supercomnet

Nazifuddin is the son of Najib, the PM of Malaysia. He was given the option to buy 18.66% of the share of a company by the name of supercomnet. The option given was for 30 days, to buy 45.357 million of ordinary share of 10sen each at the price of 22.5sen.

The news had caused a sudden rise of the share price. On 26 March 2012, the share was reported to be traded at 49.5sen, a sharp rise by about 19.5sen per share. The increase was a mammoth rise from the closing price of 14sen on March 21.

Supercomnet is a local Malaysian company manufacturing wires and cables used for the automobile and medical equipment. It was listed in the Mesdaq market in 1999, a relatively small company with sales of rm34millions in 2011. It financial position seem to have improve, with a profit of rm3.7 million last year.

It was reported that Nazifuddin had resigned from Harvert Court in Nov 2011, after a month on the board. The speculation was, he was not happy with the speculation of the company's stock.(as posted in thestar 27 mar2012)

legalized illegal workers

Malaysia relied heavily on the services of the illegals to do the jobs that the local do not like to do. Nobody actually know their numbers, however it is reaching an alarming figure. It can be as high as 6 millions, mainly from the neighboring Indonesian.

The process to legalize them was nicknamed the 6P exercise, where they are to be properly registered and their data capture and tracked. This acceptance by the government had showed that the illegals are recognized to be a force that the country cannot go without. A quick visit to the building construction sites shows that 80% of the workers are foreigners. So are in the agricultural sectors and the security businesses.

The deadline is now April 10. It seem to be flexible line as it was early marked for Oct 10 2010. As usual, the minister had announce that the commence a mass operation to catch the illegals after the stated dates, or any extended deadline.

It is estimated that there are a total of 1.1 million illegals. So for only 380,000 had been registered.
