The cost of electricity in Malaysia is set to increase by 4.99 sen per kWh or 15% and the rate in Sabah by 5 sen or 17%. The increase is effective from 1 Jan 2014.
The price in Sarawak is not affected as the electricity is supplied by state-owned company.
This is part of the subsidy revision where the government intend to reduce the subsidies from rm47mil to rm39.4bil.
The followings are the reasons quoted by the government to justify the increase of the price:
1. Increase of gas price from rm13.7 to rm15.2 per million MMBtu)
2. Rise in coal price from US$85 to $87.5
Those against the increase quoted the followings:
- the increase will affect the industry's performance considering the minimum wage and revised retirement age.
- the government may be wiser to cap their overspending and wastages.
- malaysia being a producer of oil and gas is actually profiting from the increase of the price of oil and gas. The bigger profit should be shared with the people in Malaysia.
